Normanby Hotel - Gaming Room Upgrade

The Normanby Hotel, Gaming Room Upgrade is a fast-track refurbishment delivered by Caughley & Co. Construction for the owners of The Normanby Hotel, located at Red Hill, Queensland. The project was completed in March 2024 following an intensive two-week on-site construction program supported by extensive pre-planning and procurement.

The client engaged Caughley & Co. due to their proven capability in delivering high-quality gaming room upgrades within extremely compressed timeframes. The key objective was to modernise the existing gaming room, transforming it into a brighter and more open environment while maintaining a premium, high-end casino aesthetic. A strict non-negotiable requirement was that the gaming room could only be closed for a maximum of ten working days.

The scope of works included the demolition of the existing fit-out, floor finishes and bar, followed by the installation of new carpet throughout, new gaming bases, screens and custom joinery. All new and existing surfaces were repainted, a new Corian benchtop and tiled bar front were installed, and feature pendant lighting was introduced. The project also included a new communications rack enclosure and upgraded cabling to support gaming operations.

This project was delivered as a full refurbishment of the existing gaming room, distinguished by an exceptionally short on-site delivery window. Caughley & Co. was required to complete all works within two working weeks, making detailed staging, logistics and trade coordination critical to the success of the program.

Design services were provided by Liife Architecture, engaged directly by the client, with building services coordinated by the respective trade contractors. The design adopted a modern, high-end casino-inspired aesthetic, deliberately moving away from the traditional dark gaming room environment and instead delivering a lighter, brighter and more welcoming space for patrons.

High-end wallpapers, solid timber, brass and gold finishes were used throughout the fit-out, as specified by the client and architect. Premium feature wallpapers were selected for the gaming screens and VIP areas, enhancing the overall visual impact of the space and reinforcing the refined, contemporary atmosphere.

A collaborative delivery approach between The Normanby Hotel, Liife Architecture and Caughley & Co. enabled the project to be executed with precision under intense time constraints. Trade sequencing and site logistics were managed down to half-hour increments to ensure that every trade commenced and completed on schedule without delays.

The primary challenge of the project was the delivery timeframe. Construction commenced immediately following the closure of the gaming room at 4:00am on the Monday, with the venue successfully reopened and fully operational by 10:00am on the Friday of the second week. This outcome was achieved through tightly controlled programming, real-time coordination of subcontractors and constant on-site supervision.

The finished gaming room delivers a dramatically transformed interior, with standout elements including the feature joinery screens, integrated lighting and the hand-built solid timber and brass wine storage cabinet. The quality of the joinery detailing and screen finishes are key features that define the upgraded space.

The project reflects Caughley & Co.’s specialist experience in fast-track hospitality and gaming refurbishments. The ability to maintain the construction program down to the minute, while delivering a premium finish, sets this project apart and demonstrates the company’s commitment to precision, reliability and quality.

Since completion, the gaming room has remained in constant operation and the client has expressed strong satisfaction with both the finished result and the speed of delivery. Caughley & Co. looks forward to continuing its working relationship with The Normanby Hotel on future projects.
